Ode To Leonard Cohen

My thoughts on a sad passing of a literary genius.

Today's Poem

leonard-cohenWritten today, the day after hearing poet, musician & writer Leonard Cohen had passed. I had the seeds of the poem in my head as I fell asleep and wrote a rough first draft when I woke up before work, adding an extra verse that came to me whilst driving to work. The 2nd draft (below), which was heavily re-worked, was completed this evening.

Ode To Leonard Cohen

Like a bird in flight
You alight
On the wing
Off into the sombre night

To sing

Those uplifting songs
Of sadness and love
They’re gently drifting down
From up above

Melodies are floating on the breeze
Falling with the icy rain
The words begin to freeze
On a slight refrain

And the birds that accompany you
On your way
Can be heard to say

Hallelujah, hallelujah

And in the wind we hear the chimes
And through the clouds
The sun…
