Words I Love 012 – Nuance

A new word today, which accompanies a recent poem on my Poetry Blog where it appears…



plural noun: nuances

    synonyms: fine distinction, subtle distinction/difference, shade, shading, gradation, variation, modulation, degree; More

    “the expression of subtle nuances of thought”


3rd person present: nuances

    give nuances to.
    “the effect of the music is nuanced by the social situation of listeners”
late 18th century: from French, ‘shade, subtlety’, from nuer ‘to shade’, based on Latin nubes ‘cloud’.
