Musical Diary 02 – ‘The Monochrome Set’

Continuing my occasional series where I dip into a past musical diary for a little taster of what was happening way back when. We’re going back 35 years to 1979…

6 September 1979

Thirty-five year’s ago this week, on 6 September The Monochrome Set released their third single, fittingly titled ‘The Monochrome Set (I Presume)’ on Rough Trade Records.

The Monochrome Set

It would appear on their fantastic debut album ‘Strange Boutique’ on Dindisc (DID4), an imprint/off-shoot of the Virgin Records label, which also released early Orchestral Manouevres In The Dark (OMD) material.

Strange Boutique

The Monochrome Set, a great band; at turns fun, serious, cool and definitely with a touch of the avant-garde about them. I always thought they had a fabulous band name too!

Check out their website, they’re still active!

Also on the 6th September 1979 these artists were playing live:

John Cooper-Clarke* – Edinburgh, Old Chaplin
Lambrettas – London, Fulham Greyhound
Toyah – Manchester, The Factory

* JCC is still out there, treading the boards live with his poetry and cabaret/comedy evenings. Still engaging and bloody brilliant. If you get a chance to see him live don’t pass up the opportunity. A maverick, a true one of a kind.

For my personal tribute poem to JCC see ‘Johnny Clarke’s Party’ It’s on my poetry blog My Daily Poem with other delights added from time to time.. Enjoy!

Cheers, the MoL
